Clive Burnell

Clive Burnell was born in Pencoed, South Wales in 1950.  After leaving school he worked in heavy industry before joining the Glamorgan Constabulary and later, the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.  He retired from the police force in 2000 after 31 years service and resides in East Devon.

Throughout his police career he spent much of his spare time painting and studying art.  In 2003 as a result of favourable reviews and increased demands for his work, he became a full time artist.

In 2006 he won the "Spirit of Llyn" competition at Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, Llanbedrog, North Wales and in the same year was awarded the "Philip Malone" Gallery prize at the South West Academy Summer Exhibition.  He exhibits at galleries throughout Wales, the West Country and the Welsh borders.

"I work principally in acrylics, occasionally in oils and sometimes a combination of both, although tending towards abstraction my paintings are rooted in the landscape and are built up using a variety of tools and techniques.  They evolve over periods of weeks, months or longer but all have a common purpose, to evoke images and memories of the world around us."
